Star notes are scarce and bring $75 to $200 or more.

Worth keeping. Check the letter after the date and look for a star.

Which one do you have?

  • Blue seal on the left, blue serial numbers, and ONE SILVER DOLLAR across the bottom.
  • The series date reads SERIES OF 1928, or 1928 A through 1928 E.
  • The back has a large ONE in the middle, the design collectors call a funnyback.

Versions worth more

  • Star note

    $75–200 worn; about $400 in PMG 64

A star (★) before the serial number.

  • Certified uncirculated

    about $199 in PMG 65

    Nice high-grade notes sell well.

Check your serial number

Type the 8 digits of the serial number. Add the letters and the star if your note has them; the checker reads the digits.

Questions

Why is it called a funnyback?

Collectors gave the 1928 and 1934 $1 silver certificates that name because the oversized ONE on the back looks unusual next to other notes.

Is old paper money still legal tender?

Yes. All U.S. paper money issued since 1861 is still legal tender at face value. Collectors usually pay more for older or crisp notes.

Where can I sell it?

For common notes, a local coin or currency dealer is quickest. eBay works for notes worth $20 or more. Send notes worth several hundred dollars to a currency auction house.

Should I get it graded?

Only if it's worth well over $100. Grading by PMG or PCGS Banknote costs tens of dollars per note plus shipping, which is more than most common notes are worth.
