A worn 1957 $1 silver certificate is worth about $4 to $8. An uncirculated one sells for about $10 to $16.

Star notes bring about $7 to $13 worn and up to $30 uncirculated.

Worth a few dollars. Keep it if it's crisp or has a star.

Which one do you have?

  • It has a blue seal and blue serial numbers, and SILVER CERTIFICATE printed above the words THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
  • The series date reads SERIES 1957, 1957 A or 1957 B. Values are similar for all three.
  • The back says IN GOD WE TRUST.

Versions worth more

  • Star note

    $7–13 worn, $12–30 uncirculated

A star (★) before the serial number.

  • Certified uncirculated

    $37–42 in PMG 65–66

Common in high grade, so prices stay modest.

  • Fancy serial number

    $5–18 typical

Low and solid numbers bring the most.

Check your serial number

Type the 8 digits of the serial number. Add the letters and the star if your note has them; the checker reads the digits.

Questions

Can I trade a silver certificate for silver?

No. Silver certificates could be exchanged for silver until June 24, 1968. Today they are worth their face value plus whatever collectors pay.

Is old paper money still legal tender?

Yes. All U.S. paper money issued since 1861 is still legal tender at face value. Collectors usually pay more for older or crisp notes.

Where can I sell it?

For common notes, a local coin or currency dealer is quickest. eBay works for notes worth $20 or more. Send notes worth several hundred dollars to a currency auction house.

Should I get it graded?

Only if it's worth well over $100. Grading by PMG or PCGS Banknote costs tens of dollars per note plus shipping, which is more than most common notes are worth.
