What makes a $2 bill worth more
- A star in the serial number. Star notes replace misprinted sheets and are printed in smaller numbers. See the star note guide.
- Crisp, uncirculated paper. No folds, sharp corners and bright ink can double or triple the value of a modern note.
- A red seal. Any small-size red seal $2 is worth more than face.
- A fancy serial number. Radars, repeaters, solids and very low numbers. Try the serial number checker.
- A 1976 first-day stamp. A stamp on the back canceled April 13, 1976.
Check your serial number
Type the 8 digits of the serial number. Add the letters and the star if your note has them; the checker reads the digits.
Questions
Are $2 bills rare?
No. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing still prints them; they just don't circulate much. Most are worth face value.
Which $2 bills are worth the most?
Among small-size notes (1928 and later), red seal notes from 1928, especially Series 1928B, and star notes in uncirculated condition. Older large-size $2 notes from 1862 to 1918 are worth much more. Fancy serial numbers add value to any series.
Is old paper money still legal tender?
Yes. All U.S. paper money issued since 1861 is still legal tender at face value. Collectors usually pay more for older or crisp notes.
Where can I sell it?
For common notes, a local coin or currency dealer is quickest. eBay works for notes worth $20 or more. Send notes worth several hundred dollars to a currency auction house.
Should I get it graded?
Only if it's worth well over $100. Grading by PMG or PCGS Banknote costs tens of dollars per note plus shipping, which is more than most common notes are worth.
